In the light of today's good news, I'm approaching my contacts to see if we can put pressure on Oriel Collections to take heed of the comments made in the House and end their pursuit of 'debts' passed on to them by Platte.  I would like to think that they will, as an honourable company, realise for themselves that doubt has now been put upon trying to pursue the owner of a computer, but it may take some additional pressure to make this happen.

If anyone does contact Oriel having read this, perhaps they could post here and let us know Oriel's reactions.

Do we have evidence that Oriel is still pursuing "debtors" ? Who exactly is their client if the UK company has ceased trading? Would they really want to be associated with collecting "debts" for a company whose own financial reputation is in question?

For anyone contacting Oriel about communications received from them about contentious Platte 'debts', I would suggest you read the following:

Debt collection guidance
Final guidance on unfair business practices
published by the OFT.

Section 2.6 might be of particular interest.

It is as well to put your concerns in writing, and send them recorded delivery as a precaution.  Address your letter to Adrian Stalley.

A further point, please let us know what response you receive (you can either do this on the forum, or by a private message to me if you don't want it published).

Thanks

Definitely contact them following the advice contained on this forum (stating that you are in dispute with Platte). It's never a good idea to ignore correspondence from debt collection agencies regardless.

As Matt has said, don't ignore it - that will work to your detriment.  Reply politely, explaining your circumstances.  I am presuming that you dispute your liability to Platte.  You should tell them this and explain why.   Keep copies of any communications you make, whether with them or with Platte.  As an extra precaution (to have evidence, in case you need it, that you've responded) I would be inclined to send the letter recorded delivery.

A note to anyone in this situation:  Michael Pollitt of the Guardian is very interested in hearing from anyone who hears from Platte OR Oriel now and in the next few weeks.  You can visit his website  for more details.

Perhaps Owen works for Platte Media too? Smiley

Oriel will soon change its tune when it realises its client won't be paying them and that neither will Platte's supposed customers.

I received a letter from Oriel on the 27th March 2009 demanding payment of £74.99 on behalf of Platte International.  The letter also alleges that I signed up for the purchase of a subscription to Platte, this allegation I totally refute.

When I received my first demand from Platte for payment I asked them to send me a copy of my usage, this they could not furnish, all they sent me was a registration log which anyone who had access to this computer could have signed up to.  Naturally I refused to pay for their so called service and informed them that I felt their business methods were tantamount to extortion as they had no proof who had signed up and they were trying to extort money out of me.

Platte then moved on to their next bully boy tactic by informing me they were now sending my so called debt to a collection agency - hence the letter from Oriel.

I have no intention of paying these monies and will go to court to prove my innocences.

Has anyone been taken to court by Oriel yet ?

Wrizo, we have no reports of anyone being taken to court.  The view has been long expressed, and events appear to bear it out, that Platte would not want their business model to be exposed to the British justice system.

I have received a letter from them today with just April as the date mark.  Odd I should receive it April 1st and yet it's marked 'April'.

I will reply to them  to say this is in dispute and, as I told Platte in the beginning, I was not even in the country on the date they say I entered into a so called agreement - something I can prove in court, if necessary!

I will, of course, let you know of any response/outcome etc.,

Iv not heard from Oriel since the 24th November 2008
Iv been intouch with them tho...

Telling them there after the wrong person, gave them a brief history of Platte how there software is getting on to peoples computers who Iv contacted regarding all this....

I also told them that Platte had ceased trading in the UK which they had no knowlendge of.....

I was going to phone them and direct them to a certain website where they can see for themselves that the address Platte are using in the UK and the British Virgin Islands are all linked to other companies ripping people off, but with what I saw on that site has got me a bit worried as the guy on there said that the London address is linked with the Chinese Mafia (Triads), so I think that says enuff but wether its true or not I wouldnt like to find out....

The only people to find out will have to be the Police.....

So Im asking do I let Oriel know about the website address and its links with other companies to the London address ripping people off........

Oh what to do I ask ?
