How did Platte get my address?

Have you received a letter from Platte Media (or their affiliates)?
Did you, at any time, contact Platte (by telephone or e-mail) and give
your name, address, telephone number, or postcode? Could anyone else
in your household have done that?

Are you wondering how they got hold of your address? Well, we're wondering about this, too.   If Platte was NOT contacted and you have now received a letter could you contact Forum Friend using the email facility (the little envelope symbol underneath FF's 'eye') with your experience.

I'm confused.
To date, I have only recieved electronic invoices, and also, I now have a permenant 'Platte' icon on my desk top.
I can only imagine that 'Platte' found me via youTube! Alternatively, I might have clicked on an icon by mistake.

You can get rid of the Icon on your Desk Top if you install Ad-Ware 2008 by Lavasoft and follow instrructions. I did, and it removed it. Daniel.

My dad has had Platte's nasty peice of software on his pc for a month or so now. He doesn't have any idea about how it got there. I removed it yesterday and went on a fact finding mission to find out more about Platte. Having read everything on this forum and elsewhere I have come to the following conclusions. First I don't think they obtain your postal address through your IP address. I think they get that when you phone them. The telephone number in the pop up is a trick to get you to give them personal details they couldn't otherwise get and therfore a deception. Either way they must be breaking the law to get 'customers' postal addresses. I would be intersted to know if anyone has recieved a letter who hasn't phoned them.

No one seems to have actually been taken to court by them which suggests that they are unwillingly to put there money where there mouth is. They must know that their buisness model wouldn't stand legal scrutiny. Since Platte monitor these forums perhaps they could tell us why they are not following up on their legal threats. Most companies pursue non payers because it fatally undermines their buisness.

I have no doubts that Platte is in fact a sophisticated scam that operates on the edge of the law. There web site looks proffesional but is really very simple and could easily have been knocked up in a few hours. I am sure that Platte could easily be brought down with resulting prosecutions. There are more than enough flaws in their model the biggest being their software's inability to distinguish between adults and minors.
My dad is currently awaiting his letter demanding payment. If he should recieve one we have every intention of taking legal action and will be questioning Platte about how the managed to find his home address (he didn't phone the number). If no letter appears then we know don't we? Platte has no teeth and are scammers vunerable to the law. I suspect they monitor this site out of nervousness.

Jimmy: You'll not be surprised to hear that I, and many others, agree with all your points.   The only surprise, as far as I'm concerned, is that they have been allowed to continue trading.

For the few weeks that I have been involved in this Forum it has become increasingly obvious that all of Forumfriend's suspicions regarding Platte Media hold a great deal of substance.

If not.. why are Platte Media not challenging or objecting to his posts. Anyone else on here is taken to task by Platte Media and threatened with legal action for daring to say that their business is not reasonable or fair to the consumer. And that we all consider them illegal vermin.

I have not seen any recent posts by Platte... maybe, just maybe, they have finally given up and gone away!!! Somehow I doubt it.

Anyway, have a great time over the Festive period and don't let the Platte "B*****ds" spoil it!!

They do not know who you are untill you phone them and give them personal details!

Just don't do it!!

I have also found this really annoying pop up box coming up on my laptop will since the beging ov dec, the only explanation i came up with was i left my laptop with the fella when i went town on a night out with the girls, he had a few ov the lad's round so god know's what they was looking at!

Iv been ignoring the pop up best i can over xmas and new year but the other day was getting me really worked up as i thought why is this coming up demanding money off me when i have not been onto anything... so i googled the name and cam accross this site, totaly glad i did coz i would ov given my details out is i didnt....

since then i have called them (141) and spoke 2 someone at the accounts department 2 try find out some more details, they informed me i have to pay the bill as it is my computer it was registeded on and if i dont they will take things further!!! how i asked if you dont know my name, address ect.... from your internet provider they said... they knew i was with 3 with a dongle.... coz ov my IP address...
they said it is my responsibility because it is my computer...and said if someone was 2 use your mobile phone 2 call over sea you would still have 2 pay the bill... good point i though but totally unfair.

can they get my personal details from my internet provider?
Is there anyway i can get the pop up box off my computer?

Hi Gemma,

The only information Platte Media can discover from your IP address, if you're with a public Internet Service Provider anyway, is which provider you use. So, in your example, 3 (the company) will have a range of IP addresses assigned to them by which every one of their customers accesses the Internet.

Generally, people's IP addresses change from time to time and are reassigned - so if you unplug your USB dongle and reconnect it, you'll likely end up with a new IP address, same as if you switch off a broadband router you have at home.

Anyway, that's not as important as the fact that, without some kind of court order, no ISP is legally allowed to give out information about their customers to anyone who asks for it - unless it's some kind of criminal law investigation, and this dispute isn't - it's civil law. As many have discovered, despite some threats from Platte, no-one has been taken to court over this.

My advice is to take a look around this forum for removal instructions and take it from there. Many people have successfully eradicated Platte's software from their computers.

Let us know how it goes, and if you feel like joining the cause to get Platte shut down, or at very least their methods changed, then look at our letter writing campaign section.

3 Open ‘Task Manager’ by press Alt,Ctrl,Del in order at same time.
4 Click on the Processes tab at the top of the window
5 Find and ‘End process Tree’ the following two files PM_PROC1 & PM_PROC2 so they dissapear from task manager (some times you need to do this in safe mode)
6 Close task manager
7 Click Start, Run, and type regsvr32 -u pm_dll.dll
8 In the windows thats browsing c:\windows\system32 delete the files known as PM_PROC1 & PM_PROC2 along with any other file called PM_######
9 click Start, Run, and type in Regedit
10 Press F3 and type PM_PROC and click the find next button. When it finds a result delete it

Thank you for the instructions of how to remove this germ from your pc. My partner and I worked through this systematically and yes it has worked - we are all very grateful to you.

My mother who is a pensioner was (as many of you have been) - intimidated and harrassed for something she never received or signed up for. Hats off to her when she called Platte in her innocence to try and resolve she didn't give them her post code - as has been said so many times on this site - do not give them any personal details.

To the receptionist at Platte - how do you sleep at night?  Surely no one needs to earn dirty money this way?

Big believer in Karma so guessing it is only a matter of time for yours to come round!

Hi All,
Am following your posts with interest.I too rang the company to query why I had bills[pop ups] from them as I had never heard of them.
Male receptionist was rude and replied as standard that I owed £49.99 for a service I had not requested  or used.I contacted West Yorkshire Trading Standards as per your advice.Have since recieved letter from Oriel Debt Recovery for £74.99[£25 admin fee] or legal action.
Trading Standards replied and went through the system that I MUST have used to purchase.There are seven steps prior to the sale so I believe I would have remembered.They concluded that they have recieved a lot of complaints but the company has not broken the law.
I am awaiting the next step.Could you advise me if it goes further have you the number of people to your knowledge  involved in this scam.I read a figure of 693 but that was last year.
