As from the 17th April 2008
My girlfriends computer has been plagued with this Platte (crappie) Media stuff….
She could not have installed it at the time it said it was 1st started, bcos she was on her way home from my house..
I live near Bolton and my girlfriend lives in Northampton.
So she could not have installed it.
When she got home she found it and couldnt remove it.
I know abit about computers and Iv tried talking her through how to unistall the software. which doesnt come with an uninstaller ( which I think it should ).
She tried the Add remove programs in control panel and it didnt show up in the program files…… Oh what to do I ask!….
After a few days still no luck in removing it..
I phoned Platte (crappie) Media up and asked them how do I remove there crap software..
He told me that I had to be infront of the computer what the software was installed on, and he would talk me through how to get rid of it….. I told him it would take me 4 hrs to get there, I told him to give his head a wobble and tell me how to remove it…….
!Oh yeah! no luck there……..
So I threatened them with all the bodies I knew of ie OFT Ofcom you name it I told him…
His answer they know about us and I said no wonder they know about you……
My girlfriend removed all the files she found relating to Platte Media rebooted the comp and it had gone !Oh yeah!………
The day after it reappeared !Oh NO!
On the 24th April my girlfriend phoned them and asked them how to remove it she was told by Platte (crappie) Media that they would semd her a letter explainig how to remove the software No letter arrived after nearly 2 weeks…..
I phoned them again on 4th May 2008 and asked them nicely for them to send the letter I told them if my girlfriend doesnt get the letter within 3 days I will be taking it further with Legal Action ………
There reply go ahead ………..
No letter arrived after 3 days

Oh thats something I forgot to mention I explained to Platte Media that there software had taken over the computer (HIJACKED) and that anti virus software had detected it as a trojan……. There reply was the software is embedded into the computer and the only way to remove it was to Pay the £29.99 or face legal action ……. I thought that was illegal well it sounds to me it must be illegal….
I was on the Phone to OFT yesterday explaining to them what was going on, and phoned Platte Media again to tell them to send the letter explaining how to remove it he said it will be sent out and that my girlfriend should get it ion 2 days………….. !heres hoping!
I think this company needs closing down quick and there websites removed ….. so other people dont have to go through what Iv read on other forums about them and especially what my girlfriends going through…….
What there doing must be illegal in someway or form……….

Can I urge you/your girlfriend to put your complaint in writing to the OFT, highlighting in particular Platte’s failure to provide a means of removal despite repeated requests by you and your girlfriend? Their failure is in DIRECT CONTRAVENTION of the undertakings they have given to the OFT, and this lays them open to criminal prosecution.

I suggest you ask the OFT to acknowledge your complaint in writing, and also to ask them to tell you what action they intend taking in the light of this contravention.

Update…..
The letter they promised has not arrived…
I phoned them to ask for there Solicitors Phone number, she couldnt help me cos she didnt have there solicitors number…
I told her that if the letters doesnt arrive on monday I will be seeking legal advice…..
I told her that they have breached the OFT directive and that they will be hearing from my solicitor……

Can I just ask you one question?  You obviously provided them with a postal address to which they should send the letter.  Did you also give them an email address?  There is a reason that I'm asking, but I don't want to say more here.

Just a quick comment

Will the Internet Fraud or Internet Crime squad at Scotland Yard be interested in looking into this......
If they do will they take action.

As this company is holding other peoples computers to ransom (hijacked) and demanding money to get rid of there software...

Deception and Fraud come into mind....

Okay, so they cannot say they don't have a means of communicating with you.  I rather suspect that your girlfriend will hear from them by post, but not with an uninstall.

Well, that has been the main complaint against this company and its predecessors.  Arguably, the measures they are supposed to have taken to comply with the OFT should have removed this, although if you are unable to remove the software then the matter becomes more complicated.

Have you run the IE history programme to find out how the installation of the software occurred?

Sorry, on the other point of your comment, it is worth raising it with the police.  There are certainly aspects of this company's modus operandi which don't come under the remit of the OFT but which may be criminal matters.  For example, anything that could relate to the Computer Misuse Act is a police matter.

Iv been onto the local police they dont want to get involved, they said its a civil matter and it needs to be taken up by thr Trading Standards......

So what do the Internet Crime Unit do then ? sit on there backsides twiddling there thumbs....

This is getting outta hand now, my girlfriends getting stressed out by it, she cant use her computer, she doesnt want to format it cos shes got a lot of stuff on there and she cant back it all up  cos that platte crappie media stuffs stopping her from doing it......

This needs to be sorted 

I have looked on the companies house website  for there address seeing that its so call registered in the UK....
But I need there main phone number not the 0845 number, the contact details for there solicitors...

They promised that letter and still no sign of it.
I was told OFT would be contacting my gf in 3 working days which is today nothing there neither.....

Looks like a losing battle

I hope I dont bump into any of there bosses

Update
After phoning platte yesterday  and threatening them with the Internet crime unit ....
I asked for that letter to be sent out  1st class  not 2nd class or snail class, she told me it will take upto 5 days to arrive ..........  mmmmmmmm

It arrived this morning not 1 letter but 2 letters, my girlfriend was over the moon, now she can remove this platte media software it came with a code to remove the software .....

Shes been at it all morning and the bugger keeps coming back after rebooting.  mmmmm

shes found 2 more files what are not in the files list :-

psapi.dll
psapl.dll

My girlfriend has said the software was 1st installed on the 17th April 2008 at 13.46.12
and the website get films now was 1st accessed on the 17th April 2008 at 13.46.20

There is noway she could have done it as she was crossing from 1 railway station to another in Wigan at that time, her son could not have done it as he was out well before that time.
So that just left the dog in the house ( bloody clever dog if hes done it ) the mind boggles !

While she was doing the removal the software couldnt remove the 2 files mentioned above different.........

She is going to get intouch with the local trading standards office about this.

ah well

Update

My girlfiend is still having problems removing this software, she has phoned Platte Media 4 times today.
Each time she has been told to access there website so that they can remove the software from her computer  ( How the hell are they going to do that unless its deff a trojan mmmmm )

She keeps getting asked when is she going to pay the outstanding balance........

Never was my reply to that.......
 
She cant get onto there website as there software wont let her do anything, which I have said before.........

She has been told to contact there head office........It deff aint in the UK ..........
( yeah right phone the British Virgin Islands up and get a big telephone bill, sod that for a game of soldiers )


Also Iv been doing some tracking of there offices in the UK

They are registered in London
I have phoned a few of the other businesses what are at the the address in London, they said Platte Internation, does not have any offices at that address and is being used as a mail drop....

The letter what my girlfriend got was post marked Leeds
No address for Leeds anywhere on the letter (mmmmmm)

The PO Box is in Chelmsford ( which is another Mail drop )
With the wrong Postcode on there website it says TXZ should say 1XZ.

Also on there website is an address in Dublin
   
There Main head office is so call in the British Virgin Islands........

the mind boggles

Seeing they keep saying Legal action will be taken against you if you dont pay the £29.99, has anybody had any letters from there solicitors about this.......

If anyone has can you please supply me with there address .........

Update

I have got the other letter now what PMI sent to my girlfriend.......
As soon as I have scanned it, I will send it via email ............
She has followed everything they have told her in the letter, and she still cant get rid of that software......

She has phoned them again and was told there head office in the British Virgin Islands will be phoning her to tell her how to get the software off her computer ( ah well no phone call yet after 4 days ) THERE AS MUCH USE AS A CHOCOLATE FIREGUARD  and thats saying something......

The popup thingy asking for money doesnt come up anymore, only problem is now her computer doesnt boot up into windows now.

Its coming up saying theres a lot of missing, corrupt or damaged files when shes trying to boot up her computer, she says she hasnt done anything to her computer.

So I think this is all down to that PLATTE (crappie) MEDIA software.......

Sounds to me as if they have buggered up my girlfriends computer, because she refuses to pay them £29.99.......

Now she has to format her hard drive and start all over again thanks to PMI..........
